As I arrived to Victoria I was looking forward to see this musical. However, other music things took over and somehow I forgot about it. A few days ago I was planning in detail my last week in Canada and I realized that musical about Joni is on, only until Sunday 4th. When I checked ticket prices out it turned out that the four last shows are already sold out… Will I ever learn how to plan stuff ahead ?
But where is a will there is a way, so on Friday evening I dressed up, made my face up and quickly run out of the house hoping there is one ticket left for me. Of course there was. It’s a shame that last ticket was the most expensive one. But yeah, this is okey, good life experiences have no value.
Show took place in Belfry Theatre. Speaking briefly about Belfry Theatre, it appears to be a converted old church but what a fabulous place. Is the smallest theatre I’ve ever been to, which is actually great. There isn’t a bad seat in the house and intimate atmosphere make spectators feel more special I guess. The sound is perfect, staff is nice. There’s certain splendor out there.
If something will take you there one day, don’t forget to visit the Fernwood Inn pub – just around the corner. There is a good open mic every Thursday that attracts great local artists. Give it a shot if the wind will bring you to marvellous Victoria.
So, back to the musical. When the first actor made a sound it was certain – this show is worth any money. There were five actors on the stage. Each of them presented as a perfect singer, a multi instrumentalist and an actor. How is it even possible that some people are so talented?
I’ve been listening to many covers of Joni Mitchel’s songs. None seemed to be even close to her performances. It’s a big challenge to follow a writer of the calibre of Joni Mitchel.
Her uniqueness and music making at highest possible level make it difficult to simply cover anything she composed.
I slightly changed my mind on Friday night. Every cast member was close to perfection or perhaps they just made it perfect. For me they performed in a very sophisticated way but also moving. Exactly how Joni was used to do. Convincing and beautiful performance made me cry. This is how is has to be! Tears mean that artists made a good job.
I love the feeling of being impressed by something and some sort of adrenaline that doesn’t let us sleep. That’s funny how art can touch our hearts and stimulate mood. Even now while writing this post I feel like I would love to hear them singing again and again. I even could risk a commitment that this music experience was one of the top ten music experiences in a lifetime of concert-going. Eventually I’d like to approach cast members. Please check their work out.
