Live music in Geiranger

This post, theoretically belongs with others guiding you through the music venues, however I had this irresistible need to write slightly more about this valley that seems to have been touched by hands of all existing gods. Geiranger, land in western Norway, inhabited permanently by about 200 souls, turns into a bustling small kind of agglomeration in the summer. It is in summer, that about 1,500 people, just like me arrive here to work in various places and provide services to thousands of tourists mainly coming on one of those huge cruises, which unfortunately heavily pollute the pristine air of the valley. Geirangerfjord is one of the most beautiful fjords of Norway and even though I have been here for five months, every time I look at the landscape it still takes my breath away. Working at Geiranger is a bit like being on holiday, and the cultural mix of us seasonal slaves, I mean backpackers working in the season, greatly affects the atmosphere and vibes of our beautiful valley. There is no lack of talented souls that are encouraged to share their passion for music and play at local music events. If because some reason your wind takes you to G-town, here is a short listing of places where you will enjoy live music.

NAUSTKROA

Naustkroa is probably the cheapest restaurant in Geiranger and as it happens, they serve the best pizza here as well. During the summer every two weeks they hold a famous all you can it pizza night. The devouring is obviously accompanied by acoustic music. It’s mostly cover bands that play here, with occasional jam sessions so young musicians have chance to show their talents.

Pizza night takes place every other Friday from the date set by the manager until the end of August. Live music starts between 10.00-11.00pm.

OLEBUDA

A beloved place of seasonal workers. Every week on Sundays, a famous staff party takes place and its magic night when all employees from all corners of Geiranger have the chance to meet and discuss the events of the last week or simply have fun, talk, drink and dance. Olebuda, like Naustkroa, serves as a restaurant. Concerts are rare here but occasionally you can listen to some blues tunes here.

If you’re in the area, swing by on Sunday after 11.00 pm to feel our atmosphere and after a few glasses of wine you are encouraged to sing some Queen’s songs. It has become a tradition here.

VOGNFABRIKKEN

Vognfabrikken, a bar operating at the Union Hotel, the only hotel in the area open almost all year. During the season the bar opens twice a week on Thursdays and Saturdays. On these days you can expect live concerts with professional musicians from the area and those working seasonally in the town. Concerts starts after 11.00 pm and last until 1.00 am.

It is worth noting that the Thursday event was originally created for staff just like Sunday’s event in Olebuda. At the end of the summer, Thursday’s concerts have been canceled, however the event on Saturday is cyclical and takes place all year around.

To find out more follow official fan page of Union Hotel: https://www.facebook.com/hotelunion/ or kindly ask the member of reception staff.
